Set

We'll have one, and there will be staircases and moveable things and stuff!

Initial set meeting today: major discussion revolved around the delta nu interior. Discussed a four-part staircase that is removed during what you want, height four feet (unless we can do higher)

Battens at this point: 1 exterior delta nu house with eight windows with shutters that the girls can peek thru to sing, 2 mall archway center with led lights, pink for mall, blue for brooks brothers, batten 6 door for top of staircase (int. of delta nu house) batten 9 for cycs and projections.

Need a bathroom

Discussed suggestions of area's (Harvard classroom, courtroom etc.  that have well done suggestive pieces and then set pieces that set the scene) if projections are used they would not encompass an entire room but have pieces of something important, like the paneling for the courtroom or class room, and the corner of an exterior college building (ie quadlike)

Band will be on floor upstage and go to batten 9, batten 9 will hide them.

Would like to flesh out the set a little further before we have a full blown production meeting.

Dumb Stuff it's fun to find out

What is it like to be a student at HLS?

As background, note that HLS demands basically nothing of students. Class is never mandatory, extracurriculars are not mandatory, and you'll be lucky if any faculty or staff member knows your name on graduation day. Of course, you can put more effort in, but since you'll get a big law job anyway, you don't really have to. This means that students can pretty much do what they want, and there really isn't a common HLS experience.
Reasonably Social Gunner.

·         Attends most classes, takes studying for finals pretty seriously, and spends a lot of time studying notwithstanding pretty clear evidence that study time is basically uncorrelated with grades.

·         Most socializing done with other law students; tends not to go out during the week or at all during exams. Still reasonably likely to attend bar review, halloween party, other HLS events.

Accident/Incident

Dumb Stuff it's fun to find out

I'm a relatively-recent Harvard Law (HLS) grad.  I hadn't seen the movie before attending, and didn't hear any discussion of it while there.  Instead, I was forcibly shown it by my wife a few years later so I'd get her jokes.  On the whole, I'd say that the film gets a surprising number of things right about HLS, but the trial scenes are way off base (as are most dramatizations of trials). [1]
True:

1.       Admission.  Admissions officers would indeed be perplexed by a video admission essay; a written submission is generally preferred.  Anyway, admission to HLS, and to law school generally, is largely a numbers game where the inputs are your LSAT and GPA, and the essay usually has relatively little impact.  See Ani Ravi's answer to How do I get into Harvard Law School?

2.      Classmates.  There are a lot of driven, intelligent folks at HLS with very impressive credentials.  Some of these are also very good-looking, bubbly, and nice, like Elle.  It's great and also sometimes a little intimidating.

3.      Competition.  As with any school filled with driven, intelligent students, HLS can be competitive, particularly at the top end of the grade curve--people who are going for Law Review or prestigious clerkships, for example.  And not surprisingly, some students can be pretentious or obnoxious.  This is far from unique to HLS, or law school generally.  For a very funny (if exaggerated) rundown of the social types at HLS, check out Ani Ravi's answer to What is it like to be a student at HLS?

4.      Classes.  Classes at HLS, especially during the first year, are typically conducted in large lecture halls in groups of 70 students or more.  Instruction often follows the casebook method and professors sometimes engage in Socratic dialog with students.  Some teachers (though many fewer than in years past) take a perverse pleasure in tormenting or ejecting students whom they consider unprepared.  This can be stressful and humiliating to some, especially if, like me, you frequently skipped the reading, weren't bright enough to fully comprehend it, or were too hung over to remember it. [2]

5.      Skeev. Some professors are known for playing favorites and/or having scurrilous relationships with students--you hear about this almost as soon as you arrive.  I have no idea whether there's more or less of this at HLS than at other law schools, or whether there's more of this at law schools generally than at other grad schools, but it attracts a lot of prurient interest.

6.      Partying with small "c" conservatives.  HLS types (like many lawyers) tend to be a little conservative and risk-averse in their social and personal life.  Accordingly, HLS (and most law school) parties are, as a rule, less fun than college parties, with less elaborate planning and fewer bunny costumes.

7.      Political careers.  Some people at HLS aspire to a political or judicial career, or at least want to keep their options open. This reinforces the trend toward tame parties described above, and can emerge in other odd ways, such as reluctance to divulge political preference or aversion to being photographed with a beer in hand.
